The University of Amsterdam is ranked 62nd in the Times Higher Education World University Ranking 2026. That is four places lower than last year, when the UvA was 58th. The rankings appeared on Thursday, 9 October.

A total of five Dutch universities have a place in the top 100. The UvA is the second-highest-ranked Dutch university in the rankings. As with last year, Delft University of Technology (TU Delft) has the highest position for a Dutch university, ranking 57th.

The global ranking is topped by the University of Oxford, followed by the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) in second place. This year, third place is shared by Princeton University and the University of Cambridge.

Method

The ranking is based on 18 performance indicators, divided into five areas: Teaching (the learning environment): 29.5%; Research environment (volume, income, and reputation): 29%; Research quality (citation impact, research strength, research excellence, and research influence): 30%; International outlook (staff, students, and research): 7.5%; and Industry (income and patents): 4%. The UvA scores highest in the Research quality category.
