As of June 1st, Joke Hermes will be Erik de Vries professor in the history of radio and television on behalf of the Netherlands Institute for Sound and Vision.

She will focus on how especially television allows for convivial exchange across social divisions and extend her audience research experience to show how shared recollection of media historical moments and texts greatly matter. Although both radio and television seem far removed from their earlier broadcast forms, old and new shows, series and programs continue to find and bind audiences. From both her lectoraat (professorship) at Inholland UAS and the De Vries chair, she will use encounters with audience members to query how 21st century incarnations of cultural institutions such as broadcasting but also the public library or the museum can carry forward their connective agendas and authority in a post-paternalist form.
