The Disseration Award of the Amsterdam School of Historical Studies for the academic years 2022-2024 has been awarded by the ASH Advisory Board to Weixuan Li for her dissertation Painters’ playbooks: Deep mapping socio-spatial strategies in the art market of seventeenth-century Amsterdam.

Painters' playbooks: Deep mapping socio-spatial strategies in the art market of seventeenth-century Amsterdam focuses on a socio-spatial approach to examine the development of the Amsterdam art market. With an innovative combination of qualitative and quantitative, analogue and digital, humanities, geographical and social sciences approaches the dissertation offers a surprising new insight in the early modern art marker of Amsterdam.

The Advisory Board was impressed by the very innovative approach with a new and impressive methodology being showcased in her use of deep mapping. They were also impressed with the complexity and diverse layers Weixuan Li displayed in the dissertation. In short, she has written an exemplary dissertation which fully deserves the ASH Dissertation Award.

About the award

The ASH dissertation award is presented every other year to the author of the best doctoral dissertation of the Amsterdam School for Historical Studies. The award is accompanied by a prize of € 500.
