Danielle van den Heuvel, Associate Professor in Early Modern History, has been appointed as the new director of the Amsterdam School of Historical Studies. Since 1 Augustus 2022 she is the successor of Maartje van Gelder, who served as director of ASH for 2,5 years.

Having started in Utrecht (PhD, 2007) and after positions at the universities of Cambridge and Kent, Danielle van den Heuvel joined the UvA and ASH in 2016. She was awarded an NWO VIDI grant for a project on gender and urban space in Eurasia, and is the Director of the Amsterdam Centre for Urban History. She has held Visiting Fellowships at the Institute of Advanced Studies on Asia (University of Tokyo, 2015; 2017), and the Institute of Advanced Studies (Amsterdam, 2020-21). Danielle will for the time being share directorial duties with Sofie Remijsen, who remains the vice-director of ASH until November.
