Carl Deussen, external PhD candidate at ASH, has been awarded €120,000 over two years by the Fritz Thyssen Stiftung to conduct his doctoral research and be embedded at the Rautenstrauch-Joest-Museum in Cologne. Carl has been working on his dissertation since 2019, which entails a postcolonial and gendered analysis of the ethnographer and collector Wilhelm Joest (1852-1897), his collection and professional networks; the Rautenstrauch-Joest-Museum arose from the private collection of Joest.
