In this session, we will critically interrogate the claim that the prison is a Modern institution by looking at ancient precursors of incarceration. We will read parts of Matthew Larsen and Mark Letteny's new book Ancient Mediterranean IncarcerationAncient Mediterranean Incarceration traces a long history of carceral practices, considering ways in which the institution of prison has been fundamentally intertwined with issues of class, ethnicity, gender, and imperialism.
