We are happy to draw your attention to the first installment of the Amsterdam Classics Seminar this year. For this Seminar series, sponsored by the Amsterdam School of Historical Studies (ASH), we invite scholars to share their research with us. This time, we will be joined by Dr. Saskia Schomber of the LMU in Munich, who will speak to us about: “I thought I was in Cnidus”: An Embodied Reading of Lucian’s Erotes. The seminar will be followed by drinks (probably in CREA Café).

Abstract:

"This paper offers an embodied reading of Lucian's  Ἔρωτες. Focusing on the embedded narrative about a young man who falls in love with the statue of the Cnidian Aphrodite, I first examine the implications of the anecdotal form for the dialogue. Second, and building on this, I approach the dialogue from the perspective of embodiment, which I argue is central both to its discourse and to its narrative structure. The agalmatophilia-anecdote thus positions bodies and embodied experience as a central issue of the text."

Please also join us after the lecture for a conversation with Saskia, an early-career postdoc in Munich. She will share why she chose to pursue a PhD, how she secured her postdoc position, and her experiences in academia — a great opportunity for (R)MA students considering an academic career!
