Abstract

This presentation explores the use of creative arts, including singing, acting, and beatboxing techniques, in the rehabilitation of speech following a laryngectomy. Through qualitative interviews (N=9), we investigate how participation in laryngectomy choir activities—such as performances and poetry writing—contributes to rebuilding confidence and serves as an educational and inspirational tool for the laryngectomy community, healthcare professionals, scientists, and the broader public.

We discuss the rationale for integrating music and poetry into alaryngeal speech recovery, providing audio samples from participants before and after incorporating singing techniques. Feedback from both participants and audiences will be presented, alongside showcased examples of poetry and performances by the laryngectomy choir, highlighting the transformative potential of these artistic practices.
