Event details of Eco-Psychoanalysis: When Psychoanalysis meets the Climate Crisis
Date
15 February 2024
Time
17:00 -20:00

What happens to our human psyches when facing the climate emergency? How did we get here in the first place? How might we respond in positive ways to the headwinds of this global crisis and somehow look after our mental health?

On Thursday the 15th February, at 17.00 hrs CET, the ASCA/NICA Eco-Psychoanalysis Research Group, has the honour of welcoming esteemed psychoanalyst Dr. Sally Weintrobe, for an online Zoom event. Dr. Weintrobe is an internationally recognised specialist in the intersecting fields of psychoanalysis, the climate crisis and what she terms in her 2023 book, “neoliberal exceptionalism.” She has published a range of articles and books which examine these vital engagements between psychoanalysis, psychology, environmental humanities and questions of care.

Dr. Weintrobe’s talk will focus on these matters, and will refer to the readings in the Dropbox. This will be available as soon as you sign up for this event. Her talk will lead into a group discussion.

If you get a chance to do the readings, great. If not, and you are still interested, you are still welcome. The Dropbox contains a PDF of her recent book, The Psychological Roots of the Climate Crisis: Neoliberal Exceptionalism and the Culture of Uncare (2023). Attendees can therefore peruse this book. It is very readable. Part 1 is recommended. Included in the Dropbox is Dr. Weintrobe’s article on “moral injury.” There is a file with both a podcast episode and a Youtube event – both make her work accessible. The Dropbox is available to those who sign up for the event. They will also receive the Zoom link. Please do not pass on the PDF of Dr. Weintrobe’s book. It is intended only for those attending the event.

Based in London, Sally Weintrobe is a Fellow of the British Psychoanalytical Society (BPAS), an original member of the Climate Psychology Alliance (CPA) and the Chair of the International Psychoanalytic Association’s Climate Committee.
