“Remix, Reimagine & Reanimate: The Archival Potentials of Videographic Criticism” - Will DiGravio

My project seeks to contribute to the burgeoning field of videographic criticism, a form of scholarly practice in Film & Media Studies. In particular, my proposal centers on the potentials of videographic criticism to remix, reimagine, and (re)animate archives of various kinds. Practitioners of videographic criticism primarily make online video essays. Given the general ubiquity of this form in the digital space, it has the potential to not only generate new knowledge, but reimagine how scholarly engagement with the archive can reach new and diverse audiences. By engaging with the archive in this way, my project will also explore the possibilities of videographic criticism itself as it relates to form, exhibition, and scholarly practice. My intention is to engage with the archive in a variety of ways. Specifically, I plan to work with archives that have a substantial collection related to independent and avant-garde cinema. Videographic criticism has certain roots in the avant-garde. My intention will be to understand the history of the avant-garde, but also to unpack how videographic criticism marks a continuation -- and differentiation from -- the avant-garde.
