UvA researchers Marjet Brolsma (European Studies) and Floris Roelofsen (ILLC, SignLab) will receive a grant from the Dutch Research Council (NWO) through the Impact Explorer call. This funding offers researchers the opportunity to explore the potential societal impact of unexpected discoveries.

The granted projects:

Voices from the past. Exploring the opportunities of the Radio Oranje collection for getting a better understanding of the Second World War and fostering history and citizenship education
Marjet Brolsma

With fewer and fewer eyewitnesses remaining, primary sources from the Second World War are becoming increasingly important for understanding the experiences of those who lived through it. New, unexpected historical insights anticipate this trend, by demonstrating the unique value of the transcripts of the Radio Oranje broadcasts as a historical source for contextualizing the beliefs, expectations, and experiences of individuals in Nazi-occupied Netherlands. In this collaborative project, archivists, historians, and educational professionals explore the opportunities of this rich source collection for getting a better understanding of the Second World War and fostering history and citizenship education.

3D Sign Language Animations for Learners of Dutch Sign Language
Floris Roelofsen

An important insight emerging from the ongoing VICI project Questions in Sign Language is that 2D videos have important shortcomings for sign language learners, because in 2D videos signs can only be watched from one fixed angle, and important details such as the exact handshape are often not completely visible. To address this issue, this project will create high-quality 3D animations of the first 2,000 words that Dutch children learn, translated to Dutch Sign Language (NGT). These animations will be incorporated in the mobile sign language learning app Signio, and in the online NGT SignBank.

About the Impact Explorer

When conducting scientific research, you sometimes encounter unexpected results that were not taken into account beforehand. It is precisely these unexpected discoveries that can yield valuable new insights. The Impact Explorer call offers researchers the opportunity to explore the potential impact of these discoveries. A minimum of 20,000 and a maximum of 30,000 euro is available per proposal.
