The urgency of climate breakdown raises many questions about how we think about, give meaning to and imagine European Studies. Climate imaginaries – the collective means through which we envisage and tell stories about climate change – are a key part of this debate. In this workshop, we bring to a conclusion a Jean Monnet module on European climate imaginaries, with a specific focus on the role of European climate imaginaries in education. In doing so, we ask: what role do the humanities play in climate change education? How can we teach and learn about climate imaginaries in European Studies and other humanities disciplines? Convened by Andrew Telford, Zamira Xhaferri, Jesse van Amelsvoort, PW Zuidhof, Matteo Fermeglia and Urszula Malecka, this workshop hopes to provoke a polite, collegial discussion on these questions. Specifically, the event includes:

10.00-10.30 – Welcome and introduction

10.30-12.30 – Panel on the humanities and climate change education, including Catherine Walker (Newcastle University), Bryan Yazell (University of Southern Denmark) and Sandra Nobrega (Hague University of Applied Sciences)

13.30-15.00– After lunch, a round table with colleagues in the UvA on challenges in the field, including Gianamar Giovanetti Singh, Urszula Malecka, and Rebecca Pearson
