Inni Ludzie (Other People)

Dorota Masłowska’s Inni Ludzie (Other People) is set within the urban spaces of Warsaw, and the tensions between local, national, and global contexts within the post-soviet metropolis and its society seduced by Western culture and its dreams. It tells the story of an affair between Kamil, a 32-year-old “chav,” who dreams of a career as a Hip Hop artist, and Iwona, a representative of the metropolitan middle class, who is going through a marital crisis. All this is a pretext for reflecting on the pop-culture-immersed, rhythmic, poetic, and vulgar language used by the characters created by Masłowska, which prevents them from establishing authentic relationships.

The individual languages of the characters – and their interactions – create a fascinating soundscape, the aura of the big city. Inspired by it, Teatr Barakah’s production explores these languages, asking: are we the ones who use language, or has language taken control of us? Is there a sphere of non-verbal communication and can it be realized and reflected upon in some way? What is creativity in the field of language?
