An intensive, interactive course that takes humanities PhD researchers from an existing project to a realistic research design and a work plan for the pilot study.

Across six three-hour sessions, participants work on their own material from the first meeting, taking up the elements of the design: the research problem, the selection of material (objects, cases, data), the relevant literature and theoretical frames, and the structure and scope. These are treated not as a fixed sequence but as parts that have to be brought into conversation, and are then drawn together into the pilot study and a work plan for the coming years. The course involves a significant amount of reading and writing. Attendance at all sessions is mandatory.

Entry requirements

The course is intended for starting PhD candidates in the humanities who have already begun their project and have material to work with, and who are preparing or about to prepare their pilot study. No prior training in a particular method is assumed, since the course works across the range of humanities disciplines rather than within any one of them. Participants should come ready to write and to read a substantial amount between sessions. Because each session builds on shared work and peer exchange, attendance at all six sessions is required.

Objectives

By the end of the course, participants can:

  • Articulate a researchable problem and locate it within the scholarly debates of their disciplines.
  • Select and justify the material, objects, cases or data at the centre of the pilot study.
  • Bring relevant literature and theoretical frames into conversation with that material rather than treating them as separate stages.
  • Give a coherent account of their methods and the kind of knowledge these produce. Recognise that theory itself can function as a method.
  • Last, but not least, set a feasible scope and a work plan for the years ahead.

Peer learning is a core element of this course, as such, participants will present and defend these choices to peers from other fields.

    The course runs as six three-hour sessions in which participants work on their own project throughout. Each session pairs guided discussion of a shared theme with sustained workshop time on participants' own material, and closes with a short piece of writing that feeds the next stage.

    Across the six sessions, the course takes up the elements of a research design: the research problem, the selection of material (objects, cases, data), the relevant literature and theoretical frames, the methods, and the structure and scope. These are treated not as a sequence to be completed in turn but as parts that have to be brought into conversation, so that participants see how the elements shape one another. A recurring feature is cross-examination between disciplines, where participants explain and defend their choices to colleagues who do not share their assumptions. The work is drawn together into the set-up and early writing of the pilot study and a work plan for the coming years.

      • Map a coherent chain from research question through method to evidence.
      • Treat positionality and reflexivity analytically rather than as confession.

      • Specify what will count as evidence and where it is located.
      • Assess access, ethics and the politics of the sources.
      • Identify the silences and limits in the evidence base.

  • Session 5. Structure, scope and argument

      • Sketch how the chapters relate and how they build a single argument.
      • Judge the feasibility of the project against the time available.
      • Reduce an over-scoped design to a size one researcher can complete.

  • Session 6. Project planning and the proposal

      • Build a realistic timeline with milestones, dependencies and contingencies.
      • Treat project management as part of the research design, not an afterthought.
      • Defend the complete design aloud and give structured peer feedback.
