UvA ranked number one Dutch university in QS World University Rankings

The University of Amsterdam (UvA) has climbed six spots in this year’s QS World University Rankings, and is now 55th in the world. This places the UvA as the top Dutch university on the list and within the top 5% globally. After evaluating a total 1,673 universities, QS included 1,300 of the universities in their 2021-2022 rankings, which were published on Tuesday, 8 June.

Methodology

The QS World University Rankings are compiled based on six criteria: academic reputation (40%), employer reputation (10%), citations per faculty (20%), student to faculty ration (20%), international faculty (5%) and international students (5%). Two areas in which the UvA scores highly are citations and academic reputation.

Top-ranked universities

The top university in the world is the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), who have occupied this spot for the 10th year in a row. Taking second and third place respectively are the University of Oxford and Stanford University.

The Netherlands is well represented in the rankings, with a total of nine Dutch universities in the top 200. Alongside the University of Amsterdam, TU Delft is also ranked in the top 100, placing at number 57.

Rankings by subject

In March, QS published their 2021 World Rankings by Subject. In this ranking, the UvA was listed as number one in the world for Communication Science and Media Studies, in addition to top 100 rankings for 27 other subject areas.
