The University of Amsterdam (UvA) is the best Dutch university in six subjects according to the QS World University Ranking by Subject 2012. In the rankings for Communication and Media Studies, the UvA occupies 13th place worldwide.

The UvA also scores highest of all Dutch universities in the global rankings for Geography (21st place), Linguistics (25th place), Sociology (29th place), Psychology (38th place) and Philosophy (46th place). Law (38th place) is the seventh subject in which the UvA ranks in the top 50 worldwide.

In the rankings for Communication and Media Studies, Sociology, Linguistics and Psychology, the UvA is also the top university in continental Europe.

UvA appears in rankings for 22 of 29 subjects

QS compiled ​​29 subject rankings, with the UvA appearing in 22 of these. An institution is only recorded in such a top 200 when it exceeds a given threshold for papers published per discipline and is mentioned a number of times in reputation surveys.

The QS World University Rankings by Subject is based on reputation among academics and employers, as well as on publication and citation rates.
