On Wednesday, 25 September, the video installation by cultural theorist and artist Mieke Bal, titled 'Don Quijote and the problem of communication', will be opened. Her five-screen installation will be placed in the foyer in front of the VOC-zaal in the Bushuis. On this occasion, her newest book, 'Het geel van Marcel Proust', will also be presented.
We would like to welcome you to the Bushuis from 16:30. During the book presentation, which will start at 17:00, Mieke Bal will present the first copy of her book to artist Fiona Tan. Subsequently, the video installation will be introduced by Esther Peeren, the director of the Amsterdam School for Cultural Analysis, after which Mieke Bal will provide additional information. The attendees can take a look at the video installation during the drinks reception.
Don Quijote and the problem of communication offers an inquiry into the difficulties of communication people encounter, and which the different disciplines of the Humanities can help examine and address. In the international, multilingual societies of today, it is more than ever necessary to communicate, against the odds of cultural and linguistic differences. More difficult, even, are the questions of speaking, listening, and understanding in relations with traumatised others.
The video installation will be on display in the foyer in front of the VOC-zaal in the Bushuis/Oost-Indisch Huis, Kloveniersburgwal 48 in Amsterdam, from 25 September until 22 November.
Images activate our thinking and turn into points of view. At the crossroads of past and present, Mieke Bal investigates the relevance of art when it comes to current questions and issues in her newest book, Het geel van Marcel Proust. On this quest, we meet both literary and visual works of art, both old masters and present-day artists.
