The UvA FGw Aspasia Fund is currently inviting applications for the year 2020. The fund was established as an encouragement for women faculty members, to help them take a next step in their career by strengthening their research profile. To this aim, it facilitates temporary release from teaching duties. We welcome applications from women of diverse backgrounds or who have experienced a break in their career or additional responsibilities (e.g. due to leave and/or care tasks). Women academics on a teaching contract without allocated research time are also invited to apply.
As an inclusive faculty, we are committed to achieving gender balance and believe in taking additional measures to increase the number of women, especially in senior roles. Simultaneously, we wish to support individual efforts aimed at consolidating the faculty’s research capacity and enriching its profile. The — accessible — FGw-Aspasia grant seeks to enhance the opportunities available to women lecturers and researchers by creating time to write grant applications or to strengthen their cv in preparation of a grant application.
The FGw Aspasia Fund was made available by the Netherlands Organisation for Scientific Research (NWO) as part of Aspasia grants awarded to UvA researchers Yolande Jansen, Danielle van den Heuvel, Jill Hilditch, Justyna Wubs, Maartje van Gelder, Yolanda Rodríguez Pérez, Esther Peeren, Judith Rispens, Carolyn Birdsall and Chiara de Cesari. As stipulated by NWO, part of these grants is to be used for gender diversity policies.
The Fund will be used to temporarily release women academics from teaching duties to enable them
The release time from teaching duties is 0.2 FTE for one semester (6 months) or 0.1 FTE for two semesters (12 months) in the academic year 2020/2021; i.e. starting in or after September 2020. Candidates who apply to the Aspasia Fund can only prepare an NWO/ERC grant proposal with a deadline in 2021.
Applications can be prepared for the following (indicative) grant deadlines:
For details, see the factsheet personal grants (PDF) below. For advice about eligibility and strategic planning, candidates can contact the FGw Grant Team (subsidie-fgw@uva.nl).
Eligible applicants are women researchers (D, UD, UHD or full professors) employed by the Faculty of Humanities, UvA, who have not received a grant from the FGw Aspasia Fund before.
An expert panel consisting of Aspasia laureates and the research director of AIHR, Irene Zwiep, will consider the applications based on grant-specific criteria and indicators. In light of the grant being applied for, applications will be assessed primarily on the basis of the quality of the researcher and that of the research plan. The panel will receive advice from the Grant Team Humanities.
Applications should be submitted by e-mail to subsidie-fgw@uva.nl as a single file in PDF format. See the guidelines for drawing up a proposal (PDF) below.
