Guy Geltner, Professor of Medieval History, has been appointed as the new director of the Amsterdam School of Historical Studies. From 1 August he will be the successor of Liz Buettner, Professor of Modern History, who will step down from her position after a directorship of three years. Guy will share directorial duties with a vice-director, who will be officially appointed soon.
Guy has been professor at the UvA since 2009, having previously held positions at Bryn Mawr College and Oxford University. Since then he has published (inter alia) The Making of Medieval Antifraternalism (2012), Flogging Others: Corporal Punishment and Cultural Identity from Antiquity to the Present (2014), and A History of Anticorruption (co-editor, 2017). He is the project leader of Premodern Healthscaping, a research project funded by an ERC Consolidator Grant.
