In the academic year 2018-2019, Alex Drace-Francis, Associate Professor of Modern European Literary and Cultural History, has been appointed Lapedatu Fellow at the New Europe College, Bucharest.

This fellowship has enabled him to work with local and international scholars on the theme of urban transformation and European/post-Ottoman identities focusing on Romanian cities as sites of change and encounter during the nineteenth century. He is organizing a workshop at the New Europe College on 16 April 2019: URBAN COMMUNITIES AND URBAN TRANSFORMATION IN THE ROMANIAN PRINCIPALITIES / OLD KINGDOM ROMANIA (1831–1914).
