Leiderdorp and the demise of the Old Rhine trading route

12Dec2018 16:00 - 17:00

Arno Verhoeven will give the lecture "Leiderdorp and the demise of the Old Rhine trading route" about excavations by the UvA in 2013 that have led to the discovery of a settlement involved in the Frisian trade during the 7th to 9th century.

An impressive number of objects was dumped as waste in a small river, giving a view in the material culture, subsistence and economy of the settlement. The quantity and quality of pottery, combs, coins, and metal objects is exceptional as we will see. In the middle of the 9th century the habitation suddenly disappeared. Why? Because of Viking attacks, political turmoil, economic distress or environmental changes?
